Immigration Relief
The Diocese of Brooklyn’s Catholic Migration Services Office wishes to provide you with an update on the Executive Action programs on immigration announced by President Obama in late 2014:
Expanded DACA on Hold: A federal court in Texas has issued a preliminary injunction preventing United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) from accepting requests for the expansion of The DREAM Act. The programs are therefore now on hold. We believe the setback is temporary and remain optimistic that the programs will go into effect in the near future.
This ruling does not affect the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program that is currently in effect from 2012; those who are eligible should continue to apply and/or renew their status. We continue to encourage everyone who thinks they might be eligible for relief to prepare and gather the documents they need and the fees for the application. President Obama announced a policy that will allow certain undocumented individuals to apply for a limited form of immigration legal relief. There are at least tens of thousands of people within the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens who will be eligible to apply for this new benefit, which will include employment authorization and protection from deportation. To further its mission to “Welcome the Stranger,” the Diocese wants to provide reliable information and legal assistance: Catholic Migration Services (CMS) is spearheading the Diocese-wide effort to bring accessible and affordable services to eligible immigrants under this program and has set up a dedicated hotline that you may call at 347-979-9360. Please be aware there are no applications for Immigration Relief yet available. Do not pay anyone who promises or advertises to help you in an application process.
