Lent Begins: Ash Wednesday (featured in WSJ)

March 1, 2017

Father Passenant placed ashes on the forehead of a worshiper (Elizabeth Lynch) at the noonday Ash Wednesday Mass at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs. There was a very large attendance at our services throughout the day and evening to mark the start of Lent, a penitential season of sacrifice, prayer and charity.

The photo above is from an article, published by The Wall Street Journal, on how Ash Wednesday is observed by Catholics worldwide. (Subscription is required to access the WSJ article and the full photo gallery. Click here.)

Also distributing ashes at Masses and a prayer service this year were Fathers Antonin and Cunningham, Deacons Greg Kandra and Daniel Garcia, Robert Cospito (our parish sacristan) and Dennis Portelli (pastoral care administrator). Dennis and his pastoral care volunteers also visited with over 250 residents of Forest Hills nursing homes and with homebound parishioners to give ashes to those who were unable to come to church.
