Update to original post of May 2, 2025
The New York State Legislature passed the Medical Aid in Dying Act in both the assembly and state senate. This legislation allows doctors to prescribe lethal medication to end a patient’s life. This dangerous practice endangers patients, caregivers, and vulnerable patients, especially the elderly and those with disabilities, and undermines the dignity of life. Suicide is not medical care.
The Church opposes this physician-assisted suicide legislation. The remaining hope is to voice your opposition and urge Governor Hochul to veto the bill.
The bishops of New York State urge you to call the Governor’s Office at 1-518-474-8390. You can also sign the prewritten letter by the NY State Catholic Conference at www.nyscatholic.org/action-center.
